Steele Sidebottom faces nervous wait after making call on AFL future

Steele Sidebottom is crossing his fingers that Collingwood will put a contract offer on the table after improving on an indifferent start to his 16th AFL season.

The 33-year-old and premiership teammate Scott Pendlebury are playing out the 2024 campaign on one-year deals.

Pendlebury declared in May that he had yet to make up his mind on playing next year while Sidebottom has now made his position clear.

“I want to keep playing footy for as long as I can so whatever will happen will happen,” he told 7NEWS ahead of Friday night’s clash with Geelong.

“I still feel like I’m contributing to the team and if I’m able to do that then hopefully there’s a contract there for me.”

Sidebottom’s stance puts the pressure on the Magpies to come forward with an extension.

But he might be forced to wait for some time yet given their precarious flag defence.

The reigning premiers sat ninth on the ladder entering Round 18 and closer to 13th place than the top four.

Friday night’s blockbuster at the MCG marked Collingwood’s long-awaited 2010 premiership reunion following COVID delays.
