Colon cancer or colorectal cancer originates in the inner lining of the large intestine (colon). It is a serious which shouldn’t be overlooked as it can negatively affect one’s overall quality of life. There are several types of colon cancer such as adenocarcinoma (the most common type), squamous cell carcinoma, and lymphoma. It’s a progressive cancer meaning the condition of the patient starts to worsen over time. Colon cancer initially starts as benign growth and transforms into malignant (cancerous) tumors. This is why it is essential to detect this colon cancer at its early stage to minimize the damage caused.
Warning Signs of Colon Cancer
- Changes in bowel movements: Some might experience difficulty in passing stool than usual making it a challenging experience. In some cases, it can also lead to diarrhea resulting in having loose, watery stools more frequently than normal. This can be an indication that something is wrong with your colon which can further lead to colon cancer.
- Rectal bleeding: One can notice blood spotting in their stool which can range from bright to red color. This can cause discomfort while inducing bowel movement. Rectal bleeding shouldn’t be neglected as it can be the primary sign of colon cancer. People are advised to immediately seek medical attention for timely intervention.
- Persistent abdominal pain: Experiencing ongoing pain or cramping in your belly for more than a few days and weeks can cause irritation and frustration. The tumor can trigger your colon by causing blockage followed by discomfort. This pain can be prevalent in specific areas such as the lower abdomen or the left side of the abdomen. It can also lead to gas, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation.
- Fatigue: The constant bleeding in the colon due to cancer can drain out all your energy due to a sudden drop in red blood cells. This is why some may experience feelings of being tired or weak even after taking adequate rest. This can significantly affect one’s daily routine making it harder to perform their daily activities.
- Unintended weight loss: Losing weight without making any efforts such as dietary changes or indulging in physical activities can be a major warning sign. One may easily feel full followed by decreased appetite. This sudden weight loss can be caused by your body’s inability to absorb essential nutrients and minerals from the meals. It can negatively impact your overall well-being leading to several health complications.
