OAKLEY — An 18-year-old Oakley man has been arrested on suspicion of homicide, nearly six weeks after a shooting at a house party killed one teenager and wounded three others, authorities said.
It marked the second time police announced the arrest of a suspect in the deadly shooting. A suspect arrested in late October was released after two days in custody, with no charges filed.
Oakley police detectives and agents with the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Sean Karp on Thursday in the 900 block of 2nd Street in Brentwood, according to a statement from Oakley Police Chief Paul Beard.
Karp remained in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility on Friday in lieu of $3.5 million bail, according to jail records.
The shooting happened about 11:15 p.m. Oct. 21 at the party in the 400 block of Shannon Way. It killed 16-year-old Brentwood resident and Liberty High student Kemarion Tucker. A 17-year-old girl and two boys, ages 15 and 17, were hospitalized and later released.
A spokesperson for the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office said the the office will review the department’s case against Karp next week and that formal charges have not been filed.
Police in October arrested an 18-year-old Antioch resident who later was released from custody. Beard said at the time that “this case continues to be an ongoing and very active investigation … With this being the situation, we are unable to speak about the details of the case or what we have uncovered so far.”
In his statement Friday, Beard said that the earlier arrest “drew us closer to the facts of what happened during and after the shooting. Our detectives were provided with information from people who previously declined to talk to us and new evidence was revealed to us.”
Oakley police officers responded about 10:45 p.m. the night of the shooting to a noise complaint at the home where the party took place. They left after an 18-year-old woman who lived there declined an offer to help break up the party, Beard said in previous statements.
Shortly after police left, the party turned violent and several shots were fired in front of the home.
Beard in his statement acknowledged Tucker’s family, adding, “I know nothing can replace what they have lost, and there is a great sense of profoundness in their loss.”
