A vehicle crashed into the Chinese Consulate building in San Francisco just after 3 p.m. Monday, the San Francisco Police Department said in a news release.
The vehicle crashed through the lobby of the building, police said, which is in the Western Addition, near Japantown Peace Plaza and the Japan Center Mall. “An officer contacted the suspect,” SFPD said, and then the driver was shot by police. A social media post seems to show a blue Honda sedan stopped inside the building, and people running out to the street.
The driver died after being transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. KTVU first reported on the crash and shooting.

The crash and subsequent shooting blocked off the intersection of Laguna Street and Geary Boulevard. SFPD first alerted the public to “ongoing policy activity” in the area in a social media post just before 4 p.m.
SFPD said they are still investigating the incident. The department is working with the Chinese Consulate alongside U.S. State Department personnel, according to the release.
A Stanford student who said he witnessed the car driving into the building told the San Francisco Standard that the driver shouted, “Where’s the CCP?” as he exited the car after the crash. The student, whom the Standard identified as Sergii Molchanov, told the outlet that it was “quite terrifying and shocking to see.”
SFPD did not provide a cause of the crash or any further details about the suspect.
