Tamron Firmware Update Improves AF for 28-200mm and 35-150mm Zooms

Tamron has announced a new firmware update for its 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD (Model A071) and 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD (Model A058) full-frame lenses for Sony E-mount.

With the new firmware update, Tamron promises “significantly improved” autofocus performance, including improved accuracy when tracking a moving subject. Further, the lenses now support the AF Assist function when recording video.

The 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD lens is now at version 3, while the 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 zoom has been upgraded to version 4. The 35-150mm lens can be updated via the Tamron Lens Utility, while the 28-200mm zoom must be updated through the camera body. The firmware for the 28-200mm is available on Tamron’s support website.

The Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD is an all-in-one zoom lens released in 2020. It was — and still is — the world’s first all-in-one zoom for full-frame cameras that offers an f/2.8 aperture at the wide end.

“The new 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 is a distillation of all Tamron’s accumulated all-in-one zoom expertise and has been specifically developed as an all-in-one zoom for daily use on a full-frame mirrorless camera,” Tamron said in 2020. “Tamron chose Model A071 as the model name in a nod to ’71’ representing the world’s original compact all-in-one zoom.”

The Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD lens is available to purchase for $800.

The Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 lens was announced in 2021 and was recently released for Nikon Z mirrorless cameras.

The popular lens is designed for travel and portrait photography. “Incorporating the most frequently used focal lengths from wide-angle and standard to medium telephoto and telephoto all within this single lens enables seamless shooting without the need to swap lenses, which is beneficial especially when shooting portraits where a sense of rhythm is particularly important. This helps the user capture outstanding shots without missing the fleeting expressions of the model,” Tamron explains.

The 35-150mm f/2-2.8 incorporates Tamron’s VXD linear motor focusing system, promising high-speed and high-precision autofocus. With the new firmware, autofocus performance should be even better.

The Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD lens is available to order for $1,900 for E-mount cameras and $2,000 for the Z-mount version.
