Tata Harrier, Safari SUVs will finally get a petrol engine soon: What to expect

Tata Motors is finally set to offer its flagship SUVs, Harrier and Safari, with a much-awaited petrol engine option. Recently, the OEM launched the facelifted versions of Harrier and Safari with the familiar, 2.0-litre diesel units.
In a recent interaction with PTI, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, confirmed that a petrol engine is in works and will be employed in the future upgrades of the two models.
The power mill being talked about here is the 1.5-litre GDI petrol unit, which the company first showcased at the Auto Expo 2023 earlier this year. This turbocharged engine develops 170 hp of power and 280 Nm of peak torque. This engine is likely to be paired with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT.
Tata Harrier, Safari – What to expect from the new petrol engine
While the petrol engine will be less torquey than the 2.0-litre diesel engine that the duo is currently offered with, it will also come at a relatively lower price point as the design and construction of a petrol engine is fairly simpler as compared to its diesel counterpart and thus requires lesser manufacturing costs.
The launch of the petrol variants of the Tata Harrier and Safari is eagerly awaited by many buyers. The petrol engine option is expected to make the SUVs more appealing to a wider range of buyers, including those who prefer petrol over diesel for its lower upfront and maintenance cost.

Furthermore, in states like Delhi, where diesel cars are banned after 10 years, their petrol counterparts with 15-year-life would be something to look forward to. Tata has price-tagged the facelifted Harrier and Safari at Rs 15.49 lakh and Rs 16.19 lakh, both prices ex-showroom.
