He was airlifted to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a critical condition with a fractured skull and has been placed in an induced coma.

CCTV from a nearby house captured the young boy lying on the ground after being hit.

“It was pretty gut-wrenching to see,” resident Luke Clemens told 7NEWS.

“It’s very unfortunate and quite sad with how it all happened.”

Residents say the busy road has been a problem for many years.

Despite the road having a 50km/h speed limit, they say it is often exceeded by the many cars and trucks that use it.

“In the nearly 34 years that I’ve been here, it’s getting worse,” Ally Thomson said.

“We need something, there’s bus stops, and how are the children meant to cross?”

Wollondilly MP Judith Hannan said past governments have made promises to resolve the issue, however they have so far been unfulfilled.

“There’s not been any substantial changes in those 20 years.”

The driver of the truck is assisting police with their investigation into the incident.

Appin is located 16km south of Campelltown and 35km northwest of Wollongong.
