LONDON (Reuters) – Although spectators at Wimbledon are not beholden to the all-white dress code, there were a number of attendees on Wednesday accidentally adhering to it by wearing England soccer shirts in preparation for the team’s Euro 2024 semi-final in the evening.
Gareth Southgate’s England take on the Netherlands in Dortmund for a place in Sunday’s final, though as the game was not kicking off until 2000 local time, fans had plenty of time to enjoy some quarter-final action at the All England Club.
Although most people like to dress smart casual with panama hats and blazers common, many tennis fans opted for the Three Lions on their chest in preparation to dash off somewhere showing the game. Strict Wimbledon rules mean they will not show any other sport on the big screens around the grounds.
Any fears of a clash were removed earlier in the day when second seed Novak Djokovic received a walkover due to his opponent Alex De Minaur withdrawing from their Centre Court match, second in the schedule, due to injury.
Fans on Centre Court on Saturday had been seen watching England’s quarter-final penalty shootout win over Switzerland on their phones while Djokovic was in action against Alexei Popyrin.
But with the Serb’s match on Wednesday not taking place, that left fans with time to soak up the sun on a rare rain-free day at Wimbledon this year ahead of one of the biggest occasions in English football in recent years.
