After reaching the necessary amount of votes of support in the LEGO Ideas community in 2022, Minibrick Productions’ LEGO Polaroid OneStep SX-70 instant camera is now available.
Priced at $80, the 516-piece set includes everything LEGO and photography enthusiasts need to build a realistic LEGO OneStep SX-70 camera, three instant film photos, and a film package that stores the three photos. The three images, which sport decidedly LEGO art, include a picture of Polaroid’s inventor, Edwin H. Land.
The camera offers many unique and intricate details, including a viewfinder, an exposure compensation dial the builder can rotate, and an operational red shutter button that ejects the “photo” after it has been loaded, much like a real Polaroid camera. While the LEGO pictures aren’t photo-sensitive, it is a nice touch that they are interactive.
“This replica model, which operates like the real thing, is sure to spark fond memories for camera lovers,” LEGO writes on its product page.
The new set, recommended for users aged 18 and up, is officially #21345 in the expansive LEGO library. As mentioned, it includes 516 pieces, slightly different than the original design on LEGO Ideas, which included 538 pieces. However, despite the reduction in the number of bricks, the design has remained quite similar throughout the official LEGO design finalization.
Even when a project on LEGO Ideas gets enough support from users, there is still a long path toward becoming a real-life LEGO set, and there is no guarantee that a project on LEGO Ideas will ever make it to stores for any number of reasons.
For Polaroid and LEGO fans alike who have gotten their hands on the new set, many are lauding the LEGO Polaroid for its nostalgic design and excellent build quality. In contrast, others note that at $80, the set is costly on a price-per-brick basis. The set has unique components that make it more expensive to produce, but nonetheless, it is a fairly steep price to pay for a model camera.
For photographers who want to add the LEGO Polaroid OneStep SX-70 camera to their collection, it is available directly from LEGO and through authorized retailers worldwide.
