The Marta Ortega Foundation’s cultural activities will remain anchored at the Port of A Coruña for the coming years. This was confirmed on Thursday, May 16, by the Official State Gazette (BOE) with the publication of the land concession at Muelle de Batería, granted by the Port Authority of A Coruña.
As detailed in the announcement, the concession spans six years, extendable up to a maximum of nine years, and applies to approximately 13,600 square meters of land in the inner docks of Muelle de Batería, A Coruña.
Last January, the MOP Foundation submitted a request to develop cultural activities on port grounds, where it has previously held several exhibitions, including those of Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meisel, and Helmut Newton, whose exhibition concluded on May 1.
While awaiting its next major exhibition, the MOP Foundation plans to open the photographic exhibition ‘Future Stories’ in the silo and establish a bookstore specializing in photography, fashion, and design.
Founded in April 2022 as a private non-profit entity, the MOP Foundation aims to “promote and disseminate culture, art, and literature, with a particular focus on audiovisual arts and photography.” Additionally, the foundation seeks to internationally showcase A Coruña, the birthplace of the Inditex group and the location of its headquarters in Arteixo. Concurrently, it strives to bring international culture to the Galician city. The MOP Foundation also undertakes cultural projects and has an educational program related to photography.
Currently, the MOP center of the foundation is situated in the aforementioned port area of A Coruña, designed by the Coruña-born architect Elsa Urquijo. The space features a large industrial-style building and several silos repurposed and transformed into cultural exchange zones.
In addition to her role as non-executive president of the fashion conglomerate Inditex, Marta Ortega is the founder and president of the foundation bearing her name. Meanwhile, Carlos Torretta Echevarría serves as vice president. Torretta, Marta Ortega’s husband, joined the Inditex group in 2019, holding various significant roles within the Zara chain.
