“End of an era,” her Instagram post read on Wednesday.
“It’s with great sadness I announce today that my time on The Morning Show, wearing trainers, is over.
“My broken toe is healed … which means ‘hello again’ heels and bye-bye trainers.
“Hope I didn’t confuse you with the headline?
“Not going to lie … bit sad to say farewell to the flats. I DID love the comfort, so they’ll be back from time to time.
“But after injuring the toe in January it’ll be nice to be ‘on top of the world’ again.”
Colleagues and friends were quick to react to Gillies’ cheeky post.
“Great opening line,” 7NEWS presenter Angie Asimus said.
“Never do that caption again, my heart sank! But it was a good ending! Excited to watch your next chapter of embracing kitten heels,” Sunrise reporter Katie Brown said.
“Man, I would have kept running with that broken toe line. Disappointed you never got to wear my clog Birkenstocks on telly,” 7NEWS presenter Angela Cox wrote.
Singer and Australian Idol co-host Ricki-Lee Coulter said: “OH MY GOD I was about to cry my eyes out!”
In January, Gillies explained the unfortunate incident that injured her toe.
“I had a big, long ballet skirt because I wanted to look good for my brother-in-law’s cat’s birthday. So I had a beautiful long tulle skirt on — it was beautiful,” Gillies told The Morning Show viewers at the time.
Gillies said she tripped going down the stairs at her in-law’s Vienna apartment, but laughed off the injury at the time.
“I came down the stairs, my foot got stuck, and I’ve been hobbling for two and half weeks,” she explained.
“The pain was so bad I went and got an X-ray yesterday — and it’s the little toe.”
The presenter flashed up her X-ray, with co-host Larry Emdur and others reacting to the obvious fracture.
“I’ve been here on the show in my high heels because I wanted to look good for the last two weeks,” Gillies said.
Emdur couldn’t help but make light of the situation.
“Just thinking headlines, ‘TV star falls down at cat’s birthday party’,” he said.
“Correct — that is entirely the truth,” Gillies replied.
