The university degrees expected to jump to over $16,000 a year

Arts degrees in Australia are set to cost more than $50,000 from 2025, in a huge blow to students.

The student contribution for a range of humanities degrees, such as law and economics, society and culture and communications, will jump to $16,992 annually from 2025.

The new prices, resulting from indexation, mean students will pay about $650 overall more than they did last year.

The fees for humanities courses will now also be $10,000 steeper than in 2020, before the Coalition’s student contribution policy was introduced.

The policy was brought in by the Morrison government, and reduced the overall government contribution to degrees from 58 per cent to 52 percent, meaning student contributions rose to 48 per cent.

It comes as indexation on HECS debts was applied on June 1, increasing student debts by 4.7 per cent.

According to the Federal Government, the average HECS debt is about $26,000, meaning a 4.7 per cent hike on this would increase it by more than $1200.

It’s a significant jump but still significantly less than the 7.1 per cent increase, the largest since 1990, experienced last year.
