Three ways you can fact check images on Google Search

Google has been working on certain features to combat misinformation and misinterpretation of images, especially the ones created by generative AI tools, on Search. It has started to roll out some of these features and others are still in the testing phase. Here’s a look at what each of the features does.
‘About this image’ is now available
Google announced ‘About this image’ at I/O and the feature is rolling out to English language users globally in Google Search. This tool allows users to check the credibility and context of images they see on Search.
Users will be able to see when an image or similar images may have first appeared on Google Search. This is helpful in finding out whether an image is being taken out of context and shared in relation to a current event, but it’s actually much older.
Other use case scenarios of this feature include how an image is used on multiple pages, and what sources like news and fact-checking sites have to say about it. Thirdly, users will soon be able to see metadata that image creators and publishers have added to an image
Image searching in Fact Check Explorer
Fact Check Explorer is a tool that helps journalists and fact checkers to learn about an image or topic. Earlier this year, the company released a global beta version which lets users upload or copy the URL of any image into the Fact Check Explorer and see if it has been featured anywhere in an existing fact check.
Building on this, Google announced that soon approved journalists and fact-checkers will be able to search the fact-check image on Fact Check Explorer into their own solutions via API integration. This will help save investigation time into an image and bring correct image fact checks online quicker.
Sources on SGE
There may be times you come across an ad for a shoe on Search but you don’t recognise the seller. Those who opted into Search Generative Experience (SGE) through Search Labs, will now be able to see AI-generated descriptions of some sources, supported by information on high-quality sites that talk about that website.
These AI-generated descriptions of the source will show up in the “more about this page” section of About this result for some sources. The tool is available for a small number of users for testing.
