TikTok is testing the ability for users to upload 15-minute videos — in a further move to compete with YouTube.
According to a report by TechCrunch today, TikTok confirmed that it is testing the new 15-minute upload limit in select regions with a limited group of users.
However, TechCrunch reports that TikTok declined to share specifics about the testing of the new 15-minute upload limit.
The new option increases the video upload limit on the app from 10 minutes to 15 minutes. If TikTok did roll out a longer upload time limit to all users, the social media platform would be competing with the long-form video content available on YouTube.
The new upload time limit was first spotted by social media consultant Matt Navarra who shared a screenshot on Threads of a message on the video app.
The screenshot revealed that some TikTok users now have access to posting 15-minute videos. The feature appears to be available on both the TikTok app and on desktop.
“Upload videos up to 15 minutes long,” the app’s message reads.
“Make sure your app is up-to-date, then try uploading from your app, or desktop on TikTok.”
TikTok’s Move to Long-Form Video Content
TikTok initially became popular as a short-form video platform, but the app has gradually been embracing long-form content.
In February last year, TikTok announced it would be extending the maximum video length from three to 10 minutes. Before that, the limit was 60 seconds after initially expanding from 15 seconds.
The increased time limit may make TikTok a bigger competitor for YouTube — which has typically been known for its long-form video content.
Instagram and X (formerly known as Twitter) have also made moves to extend the maximum video length of its videos. In August, it was reported that Instagram was testing the ability to increase the length of Reels from three minutes to 10 minutes. X added the option for Blue subscribers to upload ten-minute videos in December.
Meanwhile, YouTube has also attempted to take on TikTok’s domination in terms of short-form video in recent months.
In the past year, YouTube has launched a new tool that allows creators to turn their existing longer videos into “Shorts”. It has also allowed content creators using YouTube Shorts to monetize their short-form videos.
