Watch brand Tissot has named New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu as its first WNBA athlete to become an international brand ambassador.
From her high school days to her current prominence in the professional arena, Ionescu has carved out successful career in women’s basketball. Ionescu was Honoured as the Guard of the Year for three consecutive seasons as a top college player during her time at the University of Oregon, and she became the first college athlete to surpass 2,000 points, 1,000 assists, and 1,000 rebounds.
Drafted as the first overall pick by the Liberty in the 2020 WNBA Draft, Ionescu’s transition to professional basketball was marked an early injury in her rookie season, before a major comeback in her 2021 season.
The 2022 WNBA season saw the player selected to her first WNBA All-Star team. In the recent Stephen vs Sabrina event at the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend, Ionescu went head- to-head with one of the most renowned shooters in basketball history, matching the highest single-round score of the NBA’s 3-Point Contest with 26
points.
“I started playing basketball when I was a young girl, playing up against the boys. I had to fight for every shot, every rebound,” said Ionescu.
“No one said it would be easy, but that’s the power of adversity. Always moving forward, never giving up. Every moment is precious. Time is of the essence.”
Tissot first joined forces with WNBA in 2015. The Swiss watchmaker said its association with Ionescu fortifies its commitment to celebrating Women’s Basketball and sport, adding the partnership between Tissot and the WNBA “combines the rich sporting heritage of Tissot with the powerful essence of women’s basketball.”
Ionescu joins the brand’s roster of global ambassadors, including American basketball star Damian Lillard, Italian motorcycling sensation Enea Bastianini, Slovenian cyclist Primož Roglič, and Chinese Actors Liu Yifei and Simon Gong.
