Emergency services and other tourists helped rescue several people before they were taken to hospital.

It was not immediately clear if any Australians were injured.

Local police say there were sudden and strong winds and rain.

Visitors heard a cracking sound and then enormous branches crashed to the ground.

Management at the nature reserve stressed that the fallen branch had been in a “healthy condition” and that regular tree monitoring and pruning had been conducted.

It was reported that a banyan tree, pule tree and kresek tree growing next to a temple collapsed.

“This incident was caused by strong winds and extreme weather conditions beyond human control,” the reserve said.

“Our team has taken swift action to evacuate the affected area and ensure the safety and comfort of other visitors. We are also working closely with authorities to address this situation thoroughly.

“We deeply appreciate everyone’s understanding and support during this difficult time.”

The sacred sanctuary covers about 12.5ha and allows tourists to get close to more than 1200 long-tailed macaque monkeys.

Vision from the park showed visitors looking skyward toward the canopy before dozens broke into a sprint. The ground was quickly then blanketed in fallen branches and leaves.

The park will remain closed until Thursday.
