Tropical Storm Yun-yeung likely to make landfall on Friday

Tropical Storm Yun-yeung brought heavy rain across wide areas of Japan on Friday, with landfall expected later in the day in the Tokai region or the Kanto region.

The storm is causing heavy rain in the Kanto-Koshin area, prompting the Meteorological Agency to issue an emergency mudslide warning for the Izu islands and parts of Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures as of 11:30 a.m.

Southern parts of Chiba Prefecture, including the cities of Kamogawa and Ichihara, recorded record-breaking heavy rain of over 100 millimeters in the span of an hour, with residents urged to stay safe.

Evacuation orders have been issued in parts of both Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures. The town of Otaki in Chiba Prefecture is under level 5 emergency orders due to the risk of landslides and overflowing rivers, with residents asked to evacuate and take life-saving measures.

As of Friday morning, the storm was tracking slowly north, with the forecast showing it moving into the Tohoku region after a likely landfall. The weather agency forecast up to 250 millimeters of accumulated rainfall in the Kanto-Koshin area and 150 millimeters in the Tohoku area between Friday and noon Saturday.

The agency has asked residents in the affected areas to be on guard for landslides, flooding and overflowing rivers as heavy rainfall continues.

The storm is projected to make its way across the Tohoku area over the weekend, but it is not expected to strengthen into a typhoon, according to the Meteorological Agency.

Some train lines were impacted in the Kanto region on Friday. JR East suspended some lines and limited express trains on Friday, and multiple lines are experiencing delays. The railway operator is updating the status of its lines on its website.
