UN World Oceans Day, June 8th, is only a week away, and this year’s live broadcast event—hosted by the UN Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) in partnership with Oceanic Global—brings together decision makers, international civil servants, indigenous communities, scientists, private sector executives, celebrities, youth activists, and more to “put the ocean first.”
Among the speakers in the program (see full details below) are marine scientist Dr Sylvia Earle, oceanic explorer Fabien Cousteau, and actor Jason Momoa, who is the Environment Programme’s “Advocate for Life Below Water.” NASA astronauts will also deliver an inspiring message from the International Space Station.
The event includes the announcement of the winners of this year’s Photo Competition for UN World Oceans Day, presented by contest curator Ellen Cuylaerts, competition judges Rathika Ramasamy, Rajan Desai, Ipah Uid Lynn, Antoine Janssens, and DPG Managing Editor Ian Bongso-Seldrup. The winning images will be featured on the UN World Oceans Day website as well as DPG’s mini-site dedicated to the photo competition.
Register for the virtual event from 10am–1:30am EDT on Thursday, June 8th, at UNWorldOceansDay.org.
