Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan in India for trade mission amid pressure to bring killer driver Puneet Puneet to justice

A grieving father has issued a plea to the Victorian premier as she arrives in India for a trade mission.

Jacinta Allan flew out on Sunday for the four-day trip, with food, education, technology and cultural connections all on the agenda.

“We’ve got an itinerary that is chockablock full of business meetings and government meetings,” the premier said at Melbourne Airport before her flight.

But Melbourne father Peter Hofstee is hoping she can add another issue to the agenda and help to bring fugitive killer driver Puneet Puneet to justice by raising extradition with Indian political leaders.

“We all want to see closure. This matter hangs over our head and really we want to see Puneet brought to justice and the matter finalised once and for all,” Hofstee told 7NEWS.

Puneet admitted his driving caused the death of Hofstee’s son Dean and seriously injured his friend Clancy Coker when he mowed them down while travelling 150km/h with a blood alcohol level of 0.165 in 2008.

But he fled to India on a friend’s passport in 2009 while awaiting sentencing in Australia.

Puneet was arrested four years later, on his wedding day, and a series of extradition hearings have been taking place in a New Delhi court since then.

Those proceedings were adjourned in August and there will be a further hearing in December.

There is no indication the premier will raise the issue while in India.

“We know the federal government remains committed to the extradition and I would acknowledge the work of Indian officials,” Victorian creative industries minister Colin Brooks said.

Allan is being joined by Victorian journalists, including 7NEWS reporter Paul Dowsley, on her four-day trip.
