As a precaution, he took the battery out of the bike and threw it outside into his courtyard, Fire and Rescue NSW said.
It then caught fire, before a short time later exploding and spreading battery cells and other debris.
The incident was captured on camera.
Fire crews managed to extinguish the blaze before it spread to the home or neighbouring properties.
“Firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze and placed the battery in a tub of water to prevent it from reigniting,” FRNSW said.
No one was injured.
FRNSW urged owners of devices such as e-bikes or e-scooters to follow safe charging practices to avoid any accidental fires.
This includes charging devices outside, buying reputable lithium-ion battery brands and storing batteries and devices in a cool area.
