What are the top dog names for 2023? Australia’s most popular monikers revealed

Australia’s most popular dog names of 2023 have been revealed – with Luna proving to be a man’s best friend.

Bupa Pet Insurance has unleashed the top 10 classic names for boy and girl canines after analysing the monikers from January to September this year.

Of the top 10 names, Luna was crowned the winner, followed by Daisy and Milo.

Bella and Coco took out fourth and fifth positions respectively, with Teddy, Charlie and Frankie following closely behind.

Archie and Ruby rounded out the top 10.

While traditional names ranked the highest, it seems some pet owners are turning to designer labels, famous athletes, Hollywood, food and even their favourite tipple for inspiration.

Designer fashion labels were the go-to inspiration, including Gucci, Chanel, and Chloe, while others opted for movie characters such as Yoda, Thor, Tinkerbell, Woody, Buzz, SNOOP and Jax from Sons of Anarchy.

Some even named their pooches after their favourite drinks such as Bundy, Whiskey, Brandy and Bubbles while others went with food-inspired monikers including Bagel, Chilli, Oreo, Biscuit and Peanut.

Sport fans named their dogs after their favourite athletes — including Brazilian-Portuguese footballer PEPE and Kobe, an ode to late NBA champion basketballer Kobe Bryant.

“Just like some children’s names, some pet names can divide popular opinion,” Bupa General Insurance general manager Shannon Orbons said.

“Perhaps that’s why classic names continue to top the list, though the trend for more unique dog names continues to grow.

“So, if you’re in your local off-leash park and you call out ‘Luna’ or ‘Daisy’, and some other friendly neighbourhood dogs run up to you, you’ll now know why.”

With ongoing cost of living challenges, Orbons said many owners opted for pet insurance for peace of mind coverage.

“You can see by the some of the most popular names, that families see their pets as their children, and that’s why they’re also looking after their health and wellbeing,” he said.

“Vet bills can be expensive, and our members are seeing benefits from an average of $366 to more than $10,000.”

The lists are based on dogs named on Bupa Pet Insurance policies.
