In the contemporary era where trends and viral stuff is made in a jiffy, ‘abrosexuality’ is the latest term that has suddenly been internet’s find. What is abrosexuality? Abrosexuality is a sexual orientation characteriesd by a fluid or changing sexual attraction to different genders over time. Individuals who identify as abrosexual may find that their sexual preferences shift, sometimes feeling attracted to one gender and at other times attracted to another, or they may experience varying degrees of attraction to multiple genders.
Abrosexuality emphasises the fluid nature of sexual attraction. This means that a person’s attractions can change frequently or over a longer period, reflecting a spectrum of interests rather than a fixed orientation.
Recently, a 30-year-old woman form UK, Emma Flint, opened up about her experience. She revealed that upon discovering the term, she felt validated and felt understood. Hence, when she opened up about her barosexual identity, she received a lot of flak and criticism from her friends. Flint said that she got to know about it via Instagram page of Zoe Stoller, a US-based creator, educator and social worker, who seeks to improve the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community, that I saw the term abrosexuality for the first time. In an interview with Buzzfeed, Ms Stoller explained that abrosexual describes someone whose sexuality is fluid, meaning it shifts and changes over time. “Some abrosexual people might identify with different sexuality labels at different times — for example, some days they might use the label pansexual, whereas other days they might use the label lesbian. Other abrosexual people might just use the label abrosexual. This label can be thought of as the sexuality version of the gender identity label genderfluid,” Ms Stoller said.
Abrosexuality is part of the broader LGBTQ+ community, and individuals identifying as abrosexual often find solidarity with others who understand the complexities of fluid sexual orientation. The term helps in recognising and validating experiences that may not fit neatly into more traditional categories of sexual orientation.
