WhatsApp monthly report: Company bans over 72 lakh accounts in India

WhatsApp has released its ‘Monthly India Report‘ for the month of September detailing the number of accounts it banned in the country, number of reports received and the action taken on the accounts.
According to the report, the Meta-owned instant messaging company banned more than 72 lakh malicious WhatsApp accounts in India between July 1 and July 31, 2023. WhatsApp said that out of these 7,228,000 WhatsApp accounts, 3,108,000 were proactively banned, before any reports from users. An Indian account is identified via a +91 country code.
“We are an industry leader among end-to-end encrypted messaging services in preventing and combating abuse. In addition to our safety features and controls, we employ a team of engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers, and experts in law enforcement, online safety, and technology developments to oversee these efforts,” the company said in the report.
WhatsApp releases the monthly report in compliance with the IT Rules, 2021. These reports contain details of the user complaints received and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp.
“We enable users to block contacts and to report problematic content and contacts to us from inside the app. We pay close attention to user feedback and engage with specialists in stemming misinformation, promoting cybersecurity, and preserving election integrity,” it said.
More than 11,000 reports received
WhatsApp said that it received 11,067 reports in the month of July in India and acted upon 72 of them.
How WhatsApp tackles abuse
WhatsApp lists that in addition to responding to and actioning on user complaints through the grievance channel, it also deploys tools and resources to prevent harmful behaviour on the platform.
“We are particularly focused on prevention because we believe it is much better to stop harmful activity from happening in the first place than to detect it after harm has occurred,” it said.
