At 10 a.m. Thursday, the recorded temperature in Livermore — always one of the hottest spots in the Bay Area — was already 87 degrees, on its way to an afternoon reading of 106.

Anyone with thoughts of doing landscaping amid those soaring temperatures — and the extreme fire danger to which they contribute — had already missed their chance to do so safely by mid-morning, according to fire officials.
