Aircraft passengers might not have given much thought to why they always board a plane from the left side. We’ll share an interesting fact: this practice has been in place since ancient times, when people travelled by boat.

A well-known TikToker, Doughie Sharpe, revealed in a viral video that in ancient times, people always used the left side of the boat for loading and unloading cargo and passengers. This practice has been followed worldwide, from port to port.

According to The New York Times, Sharpe explained that this rule was applied to each boat’s equipment on the correct side. Since then, this standard has been adopted by the modern aviation sector as well.

Modern technology has been adopted globally, making this practice the norm for airports and flights. Sharpe said that aircraft manufacturers and engineers embraced this concept, and it continues to be observed to this day.

Aviation experts too termed it as a favourite practice which has been observed for thousands of years. An aviation expert added that as the ships and boats have a port side, similarly the aircrafts too follow the similar rules and people used to board from the left.
