‘Widespread distress’: Details emerge as woman’s body found on NSW road

More details have emerged after a woman’s body was found on a road in rural NSW earlier this week, sparking a major police operation.

The body was found on Parkdale Rd, Bourke, soon after 8am on Tuesday, police said at the time.

While the woman is believed to be a well-known local 47-year-old, she is yet to be formally identified.

Police earlier said they were treating the death as suspicious and detectives have since launched a fresh appeal for information.

Superintendent Gerard Lawson on Friday said the cause of death was not yet known, and appealed to the community for any information which could assist the investigators.

“As inquiries continue, detectives are awaiting the outcome of the post-mortem examination to get a clearer idea of the circumstances of the woman’s death,” Lawson said.

“I have spoken with family members and we are continuing to support them and keep them informed.

“She has been a well-known and respected long-time member of the Bourke community for much of her life, and her death has caused widespread distress.”

A 49-year-old man known to the woman was arrested at the scene soon after the body was found.

He has not been charged in relation to the woman’s death but has been charged over an unrelated incident on Sunday, October 27.

The man, who is from Bourke, is charged with stalk/intimidate intend fear physical harm (DV) after allegedly threatening a 42-year-old man with a weapon.

Police said they were called to Parkdale Rd on Sunday night when a fight broke out between two men.

The older man was refused bail and appeared in Cobar Local Court on Wednesday.

He was remanded in custody appear in Bourke Local Court on Thursday, November 7.
