Willie Mason reveals inaugural winner of special ‘Willie M Medal’: ‘You absolute beast’

With the dust now settling on the Panthers’ glorious grand final victory, league legend Willie Mason has called it the greatest win ever.

Mason said it was not right to compare Penrith’s achievement with bygone eras, and to win four straight flags in the modern game was simply “unbelievable”.

“This is easily the greatest team of all time,” Mason told 7NEWS.

“(And) defensively they’re the greatest team of all time.”

He said the Panthers seemed to find another gear each time they stepped out for a final, and he thought they had another gear to go in the grand final.

“It’s scary,” he said.

He added that the Panthers may not be done yet, suggesting they could do it again next year.

Mason said the Storm would also be strong, however, and he would not be surprised if the same teams were competing in the grand final in 2025.

Mason also revealed the winner of his inaugural Willie M Medal.

“This is the actual big one,” he said.

“No one cares about the Dally Ms.”

Mason said his Willie M “nominee” for the weekend was Penrith star and new Kangaroos captain Isaah Yeo, who he believed would have been close to winning the Clive Churchill Medal (for best on ground in the grand final) if not for the brilliance of teammate Liam Martin.

And then, in a television first, he dipped into his pocket to reveal the actual medal.

“The Willie M Medal goes to Liam Martin, you absolute beast. Well done, mate.”

Martin of course won the Clive Churchill Medal in the 14-6 victory over the Storm on Sunday.

And with tongue in cheek, 7NEWS Sydney’s Mel McLaughlin said, “I think (this medal) is going to mean the world (to him).”

Mason was certain of it.

“It will be well past his Clive Churchill,” he joked.
