Leggie wants to keep negativity away as team tries to fight back
CHENNAI: Pakistan allrounder Shadab Khan‘s report card in the ongoing World Cup has been below par. In the four matches that he has played, Shadab picked only two wickets and scored just 75 runs. His performance has invited a lot of bad press.
The 25-year-old leg-spinner had no qualms in admitting that his bowling has not been up to the mark.On Thursday, at the pre-match press conference ahead of the crucial clash againstSouth Africa at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Shadab said the criticism that he has been receiving is valid.
“I’m not performing well in such a big tournament, but it’s not like I’m always the same. There are always ups and downs in cricket. I am not doing well, but the rest of the bowlers are bowling really well in patches and are in good rhythm,” said Shadab, who was dropped from the XI against Australia.
Shadab, however, made it back into the squad for the Afghanistan challenge, which they eventually lost by a huge margin here on Monday. That embarrassing defeat at the hands of their rivals marked their third consecutive loss and added fuel to the fire as the Pakistan team incurred the wrath of the angry fans. Their players have been inundated with vicious comments from internet trolls. And it’s not just the keyboard warriors, even former Pakistan cricketers have relentlessly bashed the current team.
Shadab, who has also been one of the major targets of the roasting, said he cuts it out from social media and doesn’t pay heed to it.
“I try to cut out social media. When you perform everyone will say: ‘he’s doing so well’, but when you don’t the same person will say: ‘oh, he’s not good enough’. Because the mentality is that when someone is not in the team, they are the best. When someone is in the team, they are the worst,” quipped Shadab.
Looking at the brighter side, Shadab said the togetherness in the team helps them deal with all the flak. “As a team, we have one thing – unity. Hopefully, we will bounce back again but everyone has their opinion. They can talk about us because we’re not performing, so we must accept it. And this is a reality because when you don’t win everyone has their opinion. So, our main focus is just trying to win games for Pakistan, that’s it.”
As an individual, Shadab handles criticism differently. “You should accept reality if you are not able to perform, then you should be honest with yourself. I have a simple theory that the result is not in our hands. What is written for us, that has to happen,” he said.
