Dundee United beat Partick Thistle and celebrate Scottish Championship title

Dundee United came from behind to round off their Scottish Championship title-winning season with victory over Partick Thistle.

With promotion already confirmed last weekend, Tannadice was in the mood to celebrate, but Ben Stanway’s early opener punctured the party.

The hosts had piled on the pressure, but only found the breakthrough when a defensive error from Thistle allowed Craig Sibbald to pounce and smash home.

In the second period, the champions showed why they’re back in the top flight at the first time of asking.

They could have gone ahead earlier, when Louis Moult stepped up to the spot after dubiously falling to the deck in the box. Goalkeeper Ross Stewart will have felt a sense of justice as he parried the penalty.

But it wouldn’t be long before Jim Goodwin’s side had their lead, as Kai Fotheringham slotted the ball away after an astute pass from Moult.

Another slick move lifted an already buoyant Tannadice when Tony Watt finished through Stewart’s legs.

A more merited penalty was award as Kieran Ngwenya swiped at Glenn Middleton, with Moult making no mistake this time as United happily waved goodbye to the second tier.

Thistle, meanwhile, will take on fourth-placed Airdrieonians in the first leg of the promotion play-off quarter-final, live on BBC Scotland on Tuesday.
