2023 ODI World Cup Stat Attack: Can England do what only the West Indies and Australia have done before? | Cricket News

Only two teams in the history of the ICC ODI World Cup have managed to successfully defend the title. The West Indies won back to back titles in 1975 and 1979 and then Australia won three on the trot in 1999, 2003 and 2007.
Team England, who are the defending champions, will be one of the big favourites in this edition of the World Cup as well. Jos Buttler and co. might currently be ranked 5th in the ODI team rankings, but they have plenty of match winners who can help them defend the title.
Ahead of the next edition of ODI cricket’s biggest tournament, the TOI Sports Desk here takes a look at Team England and their big statistical achievements at the ODI World Cup:

  • England enjoy a success rate of 59.75%, winning 48 & losing 32 out of 83 matches played (tied two and no-result one) at the World Cup.

  • England’s only World Cup title triumph was in 2019, defeating New Zealand after the Super over ended in a tie. England won the match on boundary count back rule.

  • Two England batters could manage 500-plus runs in a single edition. Both the instances occurred in the 2019 edition – 556 runs (ave 61.77), including two hundreds and three fifties, in eleven innings by Joe Root and 532 (ave 48.36), including two hundreds and two fifties, in eleven innings by Jonny Bairstow.

  • England totalled 397 for six vs Afghanistan at Old Trafford on June 18 (their highest ever in the World Cup history) and 386 for six vs Bangladesh at Cardiff on June 8 – their top two totals in the 2019 World Cup.

  • Interestingly, England also recorded the highest total by any team in a losing cause in the 2019 World Cup – 334 for nine vs Pakistan at Trent Bridge on June 3.

  • England’s only total of less than 100 in the World Cup remains the 93 off 36.2 overs vs Australia in the semi-final at Leeds on June 18, 1975, thanks mainly to Gary Gilmour (12-6-14-6) and Max Walker (9.2-3-22-3).

  • Despite posting two hundreds vs Pakistan (348 for eight) on June 3, England lost the match by 14 runs, thanks mainly to the fielding lapses. Joe Root had scored 107 off 104 balls and Jos Buttler 103 off 76 balls. The said instance is the only one when a team has lost a World Cup match despite the two hundreds.

  • England’s runs per over of 6.27, while batting, was the best by any team in the 2019 World Cup. Their tally of eight wins (lost three) out of eleven matches was the highest. Australia finished second with a run-rate of 6.02.

  • England’s batting average of 40.80 was the second in the 2019 World Cup behind India’s 44.92.

  • Jonny Bairstow managed 532 runs at an average of 48.36 in eleven innings, including two hundreds and two fifties – a record for most runs by a batsman in his maiden World Cup. Pakistan’s Babar Azam had scored 474 (ave.67.71) in eight innings in 2019.

  • England’s Eoin Morgan hit 22 sixes in ten innings in the 2019 edition. Just one batter had recorded more sixes in a World Cup edition than Morgan – 26 in six innings in the 2014-15 edition by Chris Gayle

  • Jofra Archer had captured 20 wickets at 23.05 runs apiece in eleven matches in the 2019 edition, setting a record by an England bowler in a World Cup edition.

  • Eoin Morgan and Joe Root had shared a partnership of 189 for the third wicket vs Afghanistan at Manchester on June 18,2019 – the highest stand by any pair for any wicket for England in the World Cup.

  • The first day of the first World Cup witnessed Dennis Amiss scoring 137 in England’s total of 334 for four off 60 overs, winning by 202 runs at Lord’s on June 7, 1975. The win margin remains England’s biggest win in terms of runs in the World Cup.

  • England lost to South Africa by 122 runs at The Oval on May 22, 1999 – their biggest defeat in terms of runs in the World Cup.

  • England (229/6) suffered a huge defeat to Sri Lanka (231/0) at Colombo (RPS) on March 26, 2011 – their only defeat by ten wickets in the World Cup.

  • England (231) recorded their biggest overseas loss in terms of runs (111) in the World Cup to Australia (342/9) at Melbourne on February 14,2015.

  • Three five-wicket hauls have been recorded by England bowlers in the World Cup – 5 for 39 by Vic Marks vs Sri Lanka at Taunton on June 11, 1983; 5 for 48 by Tim Bresnan vs India at Bengaluru on February 27, 2011 and 5 for 71 by Steven Finn vs Australia at Melbourne on February 14, 2015.
