Apple has a major overhaul for all three of its AirPods, or there could soon be four. While all three AirPods have kept their design language the same as their first iteration, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reports that Apple intends to refresh the three earbuds wholly, giving them a new look with a recent case while enhancing the sound.
All of this would happen in the next two years, as per Gurman – AirPods (there could be two of them this time) and AirPods Max in line for upgrades in 2024, with AirPods Pro going under refresh in 2025.
So far, there have been three iterations of AirPods, all of which have looked the same. And even though there were some upgrades in the newer one, not many people are buying it. Buyers are either opting for the lower-end AirPods, or the AirPods Pro, as per Gurman, and that has pushed Apple to rethink the lineup.

So, when the new AirPods’, yes, there could be two of them, come out next year, Apple plans to discontinue both the second-gen and third-gen AirPods.
Well, there might still be two AirPods – but it would not be the situation like right now. The two would look the same – having a design that combines the third-gen AirPods and Pro models with shorter stems but possibly no replaceable tips. But, the pricer one would come with active noise cancellation, and it could also have a similar charging case as the second-gen AirPods Pro, having speakers for Find My. Though, both of these two will have a USB-C port.
Another model that is possibly due for an upgrade next year is AirPods Max. Not much changes are expected for these, except new colours, and a USB-C port.

Meanwhile, AirPods Pro, which has been updated twice in one year, with new features once and a USB-C port for the second time, are said to be due for an upgrade in 2025. Gurman believes that the third-gen AirPods Pro could get a new design, which seems possible since the lower-end ones are expected to have the same design. The upcoming iteration might also come with a new chip, which is said to enable some health features.
Apple is said to be exploring ways to position AirPods as a hearing aid and is reportedly developing a hearing test feature for AirPods to help screen for hearing issues. Additionally, the company is reportedly considering adding sensors to determine body temperature via the ear canal, which could be used to detect illnesses.
