Emergency services completely closed off a suburban street while personnel in white hazmat suits and wearing air tanks approached a property.

There are suspicions nuclear isotopes were found in the apartment block, but the ABF is not prepared to confirm whether that is the case.

A neighbour told 7NEWS he heard strange popping sounds on Wednesday night and had heard that uranium was discovered during a raid.

Uranium is a form of nuclear isotope and legal in small amounts.

It has also been reported that ABF officers were exposed to a substance.

Other residents have heard rumours the substance belongs to a customs officer who works at Sydney Airport.

“All appropriate safety measures are being implemented,” an ABF spokesperson said.

“People in the vicinity of the location are urged to follow all directions from emergency services.”

NSW Police and Fire and Rescue were also on the scene to provide assistance.

It is not clear whether anyone has been arrested or has gone to hospital.

The area has since been deemed safe but the unit block remains a crime scene.
