Commentators stunned by Jack Ginnivan call during Hawthorn’s clash with Gold Coast

Hawthorn livewire Jack Ginnivan has found himself at the centre of another controversial umpiring decision.

The polarising Hawk was bowled over by Mac Andrew during the first quarter of Saturday night’s clash between Gold Coast and Hawthorn.

It was right in front of the umpire, but no free kick was paid with the umpire “making the flop symbol”.

Former Hawthorn and Gold Coast tough nut Campbell Brown was shocked by the decision and said the umpires didn’t pay a free kick because it was Ginnivan.

“That happened right in front of me. That is a free kick every single day of the week to Jack Ginnivan,” Brown said on Channel 7.

“So the umpires are saying that there’s no preferential treatment against him, that is absolutely incorrect.

“We know when a player flops and Jack Ginnivan didn’t flop. Andrew hit him fair and square in the middle of the back, put him to ground. That should have been a free.”

Former Essendon champion Jobe Watson agreed with Brown.

“That’s a free kick. I think Browny is spot on. You can’t do that in the modern game, hit someone from behind. They go to ground. I don’t think he is faking it. That’s a genuine body contact,” he said.

Shaun Burgoyne added: “For any other player, they’ll pay a free kick.”

Ginnivan has been at the centre of a number of controversial incidents already this year.

After being denied a number of potential high tackle free kicks against Geelong on Easter Monday, the AFL came out and admitted some of the decisions were incorrect.

But despite that, it appears the umpires are still treading carefully when it comes to officiating Ginnivan.

Still only 21 years of age, the headlines always follow Ginnivan.

He was on Talking Footy this week and detailed his brutal exit interview with Collingwood just days after playing a part in the premiership.

“It was a difficult exit meeting to hear,” Ginnivan said on Channel 7’s Talking Footy.

“Words of ‘not being humble’, which I took to heart a bit, because I think I’m a pretty humble person.

“When you hear things like that from your ex-coach, it becomes a bit of writing on the wall.”

Just weeks later, Ginnivan was traded to Hawthorn.
