Companies chop more than 100 East Bay workers as job cutbacks widen

SAN RAMON — Two companies have disclosed plans to chop well over 100 jobs in a new round of employment cutbacks affecting workers in the East Bay, official state notices show.

The job cuts are affecting workers in San Ramon and Emeryville, according to WARN notices filed with the state Employment Development Department (EDD).

Amyris, a biotech company that tumbled into a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy as part of a massive restructuring; and Rodan + Fields, a multi-level marketing company, each have revealed decisions to eliminate scores of jobs in the East Bay.

In both instances, the WARN notices filed with the state EDD described the layoffs as permanent.

Rodan + Fields is cutting 76 jobs at 3001 Bishop Drive in San Ramon, a company WARN notice filed with the state EDD shows.

The layoffs for Rodan + Fields are slated to take effect on Oct. 14.

“Rodan + Fields has undergone a reorganization of its business operations resulting in job eliminations,” the company stated in the WARN notice.

Amyris has decided to eliminate 62 jobs at 5885 Hollis Street in Emeryville. These cuts went into effect on Sept. 18.

On Aug. 9, Amyris announced that it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to reorganize its finances. Included in the revamp was the company’s decision to sell its consumer brands.

“The restructuring is intended to improve the company’s cost structure, capital structure, and liquidity position while streamlining Amyris’ business portfolio to focus on its core competencies in research and development,” Amyris said at the time it announced its bankruptcy filing.
