The race was called off by the Arrabona Rally Club as eight ambulances and four rescue helicopters arrived at the scene.

“The race is off,” organisers wrote in a short statement shortly after the crash happened.

“The race in Labatlan was interrupted due to an unfortunate accident involving several spectators. The injured are currently being treated.

“Exact information will be published later.”

One child was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, as was an adult who was seriously injured.

Six others, including another child, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

In a statement, Hungarian police said a reason for the crash had not yet been determined.

According to Index.hu, an oil leak on the track a number of hours before the accident had paused the race but responsibility for the crash is not being attributed to that earlier concern.

It is not yet known if the spectators had crossed any boundaries when they were hit.

Footage of the incident has circulated widely on social media as police continue to investigate.
