Hilux: Toyota’s modified Hilux pick-up for Indian Army is a treat to watch

Toyota Kirloskar Motor recently delivered Toyota Hilux pickup trucks to the Indian Army. The pickups were rigorously tested for two months by the Northern Command of the Indian Army’s Technical Evaluation Committee. It was also tested in rough terrain and extreme weather – ranging from an altitude of 13,000ft to sub-zero temperatures.

And now, Toyota has showcased two special purpose Hilux, modified with the support of an authorised external vendor, at the North Tech Symposium 2023 (NTS), a technology-showcase annual event conducted by the Northern Command of the Indian Army in collaboration with the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) & IIT Jammu.
The company said that in order to cater to the specific needs of various consumers, including the Indian Army, TKM conducted an extensive market survey. Based on the findings, the company in collaboration with its authorised external vendor, made significant alterations to two units of the Hilux, namely the Field Diagnosis Vehicle (FDV) and the Rapid Intervention Vehicle (RIV), to serve specific army needs and other special consumer requirements.

The FDV Hilux is designed to provide essential vehicle servicing in remote locations, supporting the Army at defence sites. On the other hand, the RIV is equipped for firefighting and rescue operations during emergencies. In addition to these modified versions, the general-purpose Hilux (catering to the general customers’ personal and business uses) was also showcased.

The company said that this event aims to promote state-of-the-art indigenous development and production of defence technological capabilities and attain “Atmanirbharta” (self-reliance in the defence sector). Further, this year reflects a bigger leap in reinforcing the Indian army’s endeavours in the areas of Synergy & Research Development and Innovation for the modernization of the Indian army.
The Hilux is powered by a 2.8-litre, turbocharged diesel engine which puts out 201 hp of poorer and 420 Nm torque in manual and 500 Nm in automatic transmission.

The Hilux is available in two variants – STD and High. The STD variant only gets a manual gearbox option whereas the High variant gets both a manual and automatic gearbox. The Hilux also gets 4×4 with a low-range gearbox as standard across all variants. The price for the truck starts from Rs 30.40 lakh and goes up to 37.9 lakh (both prices Ex-showroom).
