Insta-famous Lion Deven Robertson makes surprise move with shredded jumper

Instagram sensation Deven Roberston is planning to put that shredded jumper to good use.

Roberston made headlines in Round 23 when the Brisbane Lions played Collingwood and Brayden Maynard tore the Brisbane midfielder’s jumper to shreds.

Not wanting to come off the ground to get it changed, Robertson stubbornly stayed on the field, despite his jumper hanging by a thread around his neck like a tattered scarf.

Moments later, after the completely torn jumper almost choked him, Robertson gave up on it and wildly tossed it away.

He continued to play half naked for almost two minutes before a Lions trainer was given the green light to run onto the field with a replacement guernsey.

In the aftermath, Robertson’s Instagram followers immediately surged from 11,000 and is now over 70,000.

Now, in a surprise move, Robertson has decided to put the jumper rags up for auction.

At Brisbane’s Hall of Fame dinner on Wednesday night, fans will be able to bid for the jumper with the proceeds going to a good cause. In online bidding, the jumper has already fetched $3,600 (at the time of writing).

Robertson is supporting teammate Jarrod Berry, after Berry lost his mother, Jedda, in 2013 to breast cancer.

Money from the jumper will go to the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA), and Berry also plans to contribute to the cause by running a marathon in his hometown of Horsham on November 11.

Berry said the marathon would help bring the community together and was a nod to his mother’s legacy.

Asked why not choose something easier, he said his mother went through a 7-8 year battle with cancer and never complained, and a marathon “personifies” her struggle.

“We want to put ourselves in that scenario and show why we learnt those lessons off mum,” he said.

He said he was also touched by Robertson’s offer.

“He asked if we’d auction it off and donate the money, so it’s pretty special by Dev,” Berry said.

“It’s 10 years since mum passed.

“It’s not so much about the money this year, it’s more about her legacy she left with us three boys and our two best mates … we want to bring the community together and celebrate some of the life lessons she taught us.

“Running a marathon personifies a few of those; resilience, hard work, grit, that’s why we’re doing it.”
