Intimate Bridgerton scenes so raunchy stars broke furniture while filming

One of Netflix’s raunchiest shows is bringing the heat again for season three.

Bridgerton stars Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton surprised fans with a visit to Bowral in NSW for a premiere screening, where they revealed what it was like to shoot their intimate scenes.

The stars said the scenes were so passionate, some furniture broke in the process.

“Hell yeah, we did (break some furniture),” Coughlan, 37, told 7NEWS.com.au.

Set in the Regency era, the show follows the slow-burn friends-to-lovers story between Penelope Featherington (Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Newton).

In her third year on the marriage mart, Penelope gives up her long-held crush on Colin and enlists him to help her find a husband.

But when his lessons start working a little too well, Colin must grapple with whether his feelings for Penelope are just friendly.

Newton, 31, said that it felt like a “really safe space” to explore the intimate scenes, leading to moments “where we could explore the scene and try it different ways.

“That ended up in a piece of furniture getting broken.

“We just laughed, and I think Nicola spoke in her Irish accent and I thought, ‘It would have been so special,’ I mean maybe it will be in the final cut … us breaking into laughter because I think that’s quite Colin and Pen.”

Coughlan said that she was “terrified before this season”.

“I think Luke and I went on such a journey together, and we have such a good relationship, he’s such a lovely friend, that we could talk about it, have a laugh about it,” she said.

“(We had) an amazing intimacy coordinator, Lizzy who really guided us through it and made us feel really empowered.”

Coughlan said the intimate scenes were “really some of my favourite things to film.”

“I never thought I would say that before,” she said.

“I think fans will be pleased.”

Newton agreed, sharing that the stars were able to “collaborate and work out what was best for us.”

“We feel very lucky that we know these characters so well … we know how they would get into these situations and how that would work,” he said.

Also in Australia was the first-time showrunner Jess Brownell, who was a writer for seasons 1 and 2.

“We really approach the intimate scenes from a story place,” she explained.

“(The writers) start with, ‘what character growth do we want to see from these scenes?’

“We make sure we’re leaning into that as we go throughout choreographing the scene.

“Of course, it’s also really important to focus on what the actors are comfortable with.”

Along with its racy scenes, Bridgerton has become famous for its glow-ups when different side characters step into the main character role each season.

‘The Bridgerton effect’

What has become known as “The Bridgerton effect” continues into the third season.

However, both Coughlan and Newton said that more important is the internal glow-up both Colin and Penelope experience as the season progresses.

Coughlan said that the internal glow-up “is the most important bit”.

“Penelope has this makeover in episode one, but it’s all aesthetic, and she hasn’t done any inner work — so all those same struggles are there,” the actress said.

“So it’s a gradual glow up internally throughout the season — and Colin too.

“Because Colin comes back pretending to be this dude who he kind of isn’t. He isn’t cool, he makes dad jokes, do you know what I mean?”

Newton explained: “For me when I first read the scripts and I saw that he comes back as a more mature adult version of himself I just wanted to dive into that and I was given to opportunity to.

“I wanted him to come back and feel that sense of like he’d been on his gap year, he’d come back, he’d really grown up, become a man, and I wanted to just embody that physically and emotionally.

“So yeah it was a lot of fun and I kind of relished the challenge of that so yeah I enjoyed it.”

While Coughlan has been to Australia previously, it’s the first time Down Under for Newton and Brownell, who surprised the world when they were photographed at the premiere screening in Bowral on Sunday night.

“We just drove in, I had a little look around but I’m excited to explore (Bowral and Australia) more — everyone’s really gone for it, it’s a full Bridgerton theme,” Newton said of the premiere.

Coughlan added:“We haven’t got to see much because we were here incognito, but I got messages from people saying, ‘I saw you on a plane from Singapore to Sydney,’ and I’m like, ‘No you didn’t’,” she laughed.

“Netflix was like, please just (lay low).

“I did go to Luna Park on Saturday but only one person spotted me so I was like, ‘I’m good, I’m good, I’m good’.”

The world tour is set to continue to The Netherlands, Ireland, South Africa, the UK, Brazil, the US, Canada, Italy and Poland.

Bridgerton Season 3 (episodes 1-4) premieres 16 May only on Netflix.
