The non-Pro iPhones always had one thing in common with the Pro ones — all ran on the same processor. Apple bucked that trend with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus as the processors changed. This year as well the two sets of phones have different processors yet there’s a new thing in common: the Dynamic Island. At the Wonderlust event, we got a chance to get our hands on the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus. Here are our initial impressions of the two iPhones:
Design, display
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus’ overall shape and size are similar to the iPhone 14 models, but there are a few key changes.
First, the notch has been replaced with the Dynamic Island, a pill-shaped cutout that houses the front-facing camera and Face ID sensors. The Dynamic Island is more compact than the notch, and it’s also more versatile. It can change shape and size to display different information, such as notifications, media playback controls, and more. The notch — first introduced with the iPhone X — is now well and truly deceased from the iPhones.
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus come in a new range of colours, including pastel pink, blue, green, yellow, and black. These colours are more vibrant and fun than the colours that Apple has typically used for its Pro iPhones. The pink and green stand out the most for us in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.
At the bottom, there’s the new Type-C port as well, introduced by Apple for the first time.
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have the same 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively, as the iPhone 14 models. However, the displays on the iPhone 15 models are brighter.Apple says that the displays on the iPhone 15 models can reach up to 2,000 nits of brightness, which is significantly brighter than the displays on the iPhone 14 models. This makes the displays on the iPhone 15 models easier to see in bright sunlight.
The displays on the iPhone 15 models still offer a 60Hz refresh rate, which means no ProMotion feature that allows for a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Yet, scrolling and animations on the iPhone 15 models look and feel smooth.
Camera, processor
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have a new 48-megapixel main camera sensor. This is the first time that Apple has used a sensor with this high of a resolution in a non-Pro iPhone.
The new 48-megapixel sensor allows the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus to capture more detail and better low-light performance.
In addition to the new main camera sensor, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus also have a new 12-megapixel ultrawide camera sensor. The ultrawide camera sensor has a wider field of view. There’s an all-new Portrait and Depth Control for better images. We didn’t get a chance to click too many images to judge the cameras on these two iPhones.
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are powered by the A16 Bionic chip. The A16 Bionic chip is significantly faster than the A15 Bionic chip that powers the iPhone 14 models. The A16 Bionic chip makes the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus fast and responsive. Apps launch quickly, games run smoothly, and multitasking is a breeze.
Apple says that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have the same battery life as the iPhone 14 models. This means that you should be able to get a full day of use out of a single charge, depending on your usage. Apple says that you can charge the iPhone 15 models from 0 to 50% in just 30 minutes using a 20W charger.
What we think
Both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have all the ingredients to be real bestsellers. Apple has upgraded the cameras and added the Dynamic Island, which gives it a much better look than the notch. We will be testing the new iPhones and wait for our review to find out how they perform as daily drivers.
