South Australian basketball great Greg Olbrich has died after collapsing on court on Wednesday night.
The 51-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest during a senior men’s match at Morphett Vale Stadium in Adelaide.
Olbrich enjoyed a successful career for the Adelaide Giants and South Tigers and won the Woollacott Medal in 1995 for the MVP in South Australia.

Olbrich’s 20-year-old son Lachlan plays for the Illawarra Hawks in the NBL.
South Tigers president Gavin Miller paid tribute to the “South Australian basketball great”.
“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I share with you the tragic news of the passing of our esteemed BSA Life Member, Mr Greg Olbrich, who passed away unexpectedly last night while playing Senior Men’s District Basketball,” Miller said in a statement.
“Greg was not only a dedicated member of our association but also a cherished friend to many of us. His commitment, passion, and positive spirit have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
“As a South Australian basketball Great, a Woollacott medallist, a loving and committed husband, father and friend, Greg demonstrated unwavering dedication and positivity, serving as an inspiration to us all. Whether on the court or within our community, Greg, exemplified the values of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and leadership, bringing the energy into every space.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the Olbrich family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate through this profound loss.
The Sturt Basketball Club also sent their condolences.
“Greg’s legacy as both a player and coach at Sturt will forever be cherished. His contributions to our club and the broader South Australian Basketball community will not be forgotten,” they said.
“Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time, and may Greg rest in peace.”
