The couple shared a video of McLaughlin learning the news after returning home, mixed with a gender reveal and the moments they told family and friends from around the world.

“I’m sorry I swore so much,” he laughed.

McLaughlin’s parents spent the past week with the couple at their North Carolina base to celebrate while support rolled in from around the world.

His Bathurst-winning co-driver Alex Premat wrote: “So proud of you two.”

Supercars veteran Will Davison said: “Amazing guys, congratulations. Very special adventure ahead.”

IndyCar rival Alex Palou wrote: “Congrats guys! Best thing.”

McLaughlin and Karly met in 2016 through friends when both were in Las Vegas for a go-kart tournament.

“It was cliched, but love at first sight really,” Karly said in a video with McLaughlin in 2020.

“We asked what each other did and you said you were a mechanic and I was like ‘oh OK, cool, whatever that means’.

“Next couple of days I followed him on social media and he had like 40,000 followers at the time and I’m like ‘what?’

“No one I knew has that many followers on Instagram, so I was like, ‘oh weird’.

“You were like, ‘yeah I’m actually a race car driver’.

“I didn’t really quite get it until I first visited in April and went to Phillip Island and then I was like, ‘oh, so you’re kind of like a big deal, you’re pretty good at this’.”

Karly moved to Australia to live with McLaughlin and they married at the end of 2019 in California.

One year later they moved to the US when McLaughlin swapped Supercars for IndyCar.
