Suryakumar Yadav will take atleast six to seven weeks to recover fully before taking the field again. He is out of the T20I series against Afghanistan at home.

Suryakmar Yadav injured his ankle during South Africa vs India third T20I.

New Delhi: India batter Suryakumar Yadav promised to be back fully fit and wished his fans a happy holiday season on Saturday. The right-hander, who led India in the T20I series against South Africa, twisted his ankle in the third game and has been sidelined from the game for atleast six to seven weeks, thereby ruling him out of the home series against Afghanistan.

Taking to Instagram, Suryakumar posted a video of himself where he can be seen with his left foot heavily braced and walking with the help of a stick. On a slightly serious note, injuries are never fun, but I’ll take it in my stride and promise to be back, fully fit, in no time!

“Till then, hope you all are enjoying the holiday season and finding little joys, everyday,” he wrote in the caption.

The no.1 ranked T20I batter, who led India in the home series against Australia, was at the helm in South Africa too in the shortest format. In the absence of Hardik Pandya, SKY did the job brilliantly, winning five out of seven matches while one was washed out.

In South Africa, Suryakumar was named as ‘Player of the Series’ for scoring 156 runs in two matches, which included a century and fifty. In 18 T20Is this year, Suryakumar has scored 733 runs at an average of 48.86 and a strike rate of 155.95, with the best score of 112.

He has scored two centuries and five fifties this year. Overall in 60 T20Is, Suryakumar has scored 2,141 runs at an average of 45.55 and a strike rate of over 171, with four centuries and 17 fifties. His best score is 117.

Although BCCI is yet to give any statement on Suryakumar’s injury officially, a source close to the player stated that he will have to play in the Ranji Trophy to prove his fitness in February before playing in the Indian Premier League.

“Surya has reported to NCA for rehab work and the Medical Science team as of now has ruled him injured. He won’t be able to play against Afghanistan which starts in three weeks. Since he is unlikely to be selected for Tests, he will possibly play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy in February to check his fitness before playing in the IPL,” a source privy to BCCI told IANS.
