Sydney restaurant One Penny Red in Summer Hill to close after 10 years

Multi-award winning Sydney restaurant and bar One Penny Red has announced it is shutting up shop and will be pouring its last glass in coming months.

The Summer Hill institution, which has called the 1901-built former post office home for almost a decade, will close on December 31, as the building goes up for sale.

Co-founders Nina Alidenes, RJ Lines and David Murphy said the landlord, who was a dear friend, had decided to put the building on the market in early 2024, and they had decided not to renew the lease and call time on One Penny Red and Vernon’s Bar.

The trio on Thursday said it had been “an honour and a privilege to join our guests in creating wonderful memories within these walls” and thanked the Summer Hill community for its support.

Alidenes said the suburb was home to one of the most vibrant and close-knit communities in Sydney and to be part of that “has been a privilege”.

“Over nearly 10 years, OPR and Vernon’s have been the sites of weddings, birthdays, memorials and reunions,” she said.

“To host such significant life events for our beloved customers has been an honour.

“It has been the highlight of my professional career to steer the OPR and Vernon’s team.

“It goes to show that dining is never simply about food. It is about how you feel, and how you are served.”

Murphy said the venue created a local food culture that is now thriving and “provided me lifelong friendships along the way”.

“I am so grateful for the support of the local community for championing local, ethical and seasonal produce,” Lines added.

“It has been my great pleasure to work alongside some amazingly talented hospitality professionals and to have had the honour of contributing to their careers.”

Devastated customers took to social media to share their disbelief.

“The end of a very amazing era,” one person said.

“Wow! Sad to see you guys go but so in awe of all you have achieved,” another said.

A third added: “ I can’t believe it! You have been such an asset to the village.”

Vouchers for One Penny Red will no longer be sold; however, all current vouchers can be redeemed up until December 31.
