Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou has praised Timo Werner’s impact since he arrived on loan in January, but says a decision on the forward’s future will be made following the end of the season.
Spurs have an option to make the loan move permanent for around £15million ($18.7m) but Postecoglou would not be drawn on whether he expects to have Werner for the next campaign.
Asked when Spurs would decide whether to take up the option to buy Werner, Postecoglou said: “Post-season. And the only reason for that is that it’s not about the here and now, it’s about the overall strategy.”
He added: “Timo we signed until the end of the season on loan and he’s part of that strategy to see what we need to do in the summer and can we do it? Are there going to be other gaps and where does Timo fit in with that strategy? So we have a plan in place, and that was irrespective.”
Werner — who made 56 Premier League appearances for Chelsea between 2020 and 2022 — has impressed since returning to England, scoring twice and providing three assists in 14 appearances.
The Germany international, however, appears to have played his last game for the club after suffering a hamstring strain in Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Arsenal.
“I think he’s been very good for us,” said Postecoglou. “He came in at a really important time in January when Sonny was away, then Richy (Richarlison) got an injury.
“We were short in wide areas. Him coming in was very helpful for us and I think he’s made an impact but in my mind to make those definitive decisions, I still need some clarity about what we’ve got here first.”
Spurs are next in action against Werner’s former club Chelsea on Thursday evening.
