US States With Highest Vehicle Traffic: The traffic on American roads is like an endless chain of steel on wheels with the mean machines going vroom on the long and well-connected highways.

The vehicular traffic in the USA does come with its pangs and they vary from state to state as a new study has found out.

It says that you are most likely to get caught in traffic in the state of Hawaii, followed by Florida, New Jersey, and California.

Injury Lawyers Bader Scott analyzed traffic volume trend data for January 2024 from the Office of Highway Policy Information to determine the number of vehicle miles traveled per lane mile for each US state. These results were then ranked from highest to lowest to indicate which states will likely have the most traffic on their roads.

Hawaii tops the list with 93,668 vehicle miles travelled per lane mile, the highest rate in the USA, and 20,000 more miles travelled per lane mile than the closest ranked state in the study.

Florida with 73,109 vehicle miles traveled per lane mile came second. 19.6 billion vehicle miles were recorded on 267,793 total lane miles, with 10.7 billion vehicle miles recorded on urban roads compared to 2.33 billion vehicle miles recorded on rural roads.

New Jersey is in third place with 69,268 vehicle miles travelled per lane mile with 5.84 billion vehicle miles recorded on 84,281 total lane miles. 4.18 billion vehicle miles were recorded on urban roads, whilst 226 million were recorded on rural roads across the state.

Other states in the top 10 include Massachusetts, Connecticut, Delaware, Arizona, and North Carolina.

North Dakota was found to be the state where you are least likely to find yourself stuck in traffic, with 3,819 vehicle miles traveled per lane mile. 672 million vehicle miles were recorded on 175,960 total lane miles.

Seth Bader, Founder of Bader Scott, commented on the findings, “This study gives a good indication of which states receive the most traffic based on how many vehicle miles have been recorded on the roads at the start of 2024. It is likely that tourism is influencing these results as the highest-ranking states are either known for being popular holiday destinations or their dense populations, therefore receiving increased traffic from tourists and visitors.

“Considering that these findings are from January, there may be differences in the total number of vehicle-miles traveled per lane mile in each state across different months of the year. It would be interesting to see whether the rankings change at all during spring break or the summer months when certain states are likely to be busier.”
