Truck driver fined $42,000 after routine traffic stop in Walgett, NSW

A 30-year-old truck driver has been fined $42,000 after he was pulled over for a routine traffic stop in Walgett, in northern NSW.

The Wagga Wagga man was pulled over at about 11.30am on February 2, after NSW Police detected the man travelling at 64km/h in a 50 km/h zone.

While speaking to the driver, officers observed him to be non-compliant in his work diary, meaning he was not correctly logging his working hours.

The driver had spoken to other officers about these breaches, where he was warned and directed to rectify his work diary.

Weeks later, he had not done so.

The driver told officers in Walgett that he “was going to do it later”, telling them he was “just being lazy”.

The diary was seized by police and the driver was later issued with a court attendance notice for multiple offences, including working more than the maximum hours (both minor and critical breaches) and not recording the required information.

He was then issued a penalty notice for exceeding the speed limit, which carries a $546 fine and three demerit points.

The driver appeared in Walgett Local Court on March 26, where he was convicted of all offences and was ordered to pay a penalty totalling $42,000.
