Xena: Warrior Princess star is unrecognisable as she makes rare social media appearance 23 years on from hit fantasy show

Xena: Warrior Princess star Renee O’Connor has surfaced on social media 23 years after appearing in the hit fantasy show.

The 52-year-old actress, who is best known for portraying Xena’s side-kick Gabrielle in the iconic series, recently surprised fans by making a rare appearance on Instagram.

During the lengthy clip, the LA-based star interviewed fellow actress Rachel Levy about her experience acting in a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Renee cut a chic figure with a chestnut brown bob hairdo and tweed jacket, looking very different to her days as Gabrielle, who sported blonde hair and braids on the show.

Xena: Warrior Princess ran from 1995 to 2001, and has earned a cult following thanks to its depiction of strong female protagonists.

The intimate friendship between lead characters Xena, played by Lucy Lawless, and Gabriel was also central to the show.

In 2019, Lucy finally confirmed to the Stellar magazine that the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle was intended to be romantic.

‘That’s where the characters settled. At first, even [Renee and I] didn’t see that coming, but the producers and writers knew what they were doing,’ she said.

Lucy pointed out to the magazine that ‘it doesn’t even matter. Who cares anymore? Gay is part of normal. I know in other parts of the world this is still a new concept but, for god’s sake, we just want total equality.’

In 2017, Renee confirmed to Fox News that she and her co-star Lucy Lawless have remained pals as the years have gone.

‘I feel really connected to her. She’s like a sister. She’s an amazing human being and she’s incredibly talented so she’s always pushing herself to do more as a person,’ she shared.

‘I always felt that way about her. It hasn’t changed. It’s only magnified through the years.’

Renee and Lucy finally reunited on screen in 2021 when they starred in season two of New Zealand dramedy series My Life Is Murder.
